Business Closures

Of Bayview businesses closed hopefully temporarily, are the Captain's Wheel Restaurant, and Ralph's. These are prohibiting inside seating. Ralph's is currenly serving takeout which can be eaten in the various outside areas. Also takeout is still aailable.

As soon as the situation at the Wheel is clarified, I will report it. Right now, Kevin and Daveana are ready to serve you.  The Merc is open with required hand sanitizers provided.

The key to our survival is do not hoard. What you take that you don't need is taking it away from those that do, some desperately.

Unintended Consequences

With Washington bars and restaurants closed, followed by Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Post Falls, is sending diners and drinkers to areas that are still open.

Already, I am seeing an influx of Spokane County licence plates. Villages like Bayview will now see transplanted virus carriers arriving  here. This will possibly save these areas some sickness, but

only to shift the danger to us multiplied. So much for isolating.

(I interrupted to answer the door. A kind soul handed me a box of kleenex in response to a facebook post asking for same. )

Such generosity was offset though by the Bastards that have stashed a year's supply of T/P and other products needed by those of us that have trouble getting around. These Assholes should be shot.

The risk has been shifted to the suburbs by selfish towns.

CDA Press story

I followed the story in the cda press re: the 23rd. If none of you read the paper, that isn't my fault. I did however not know the identity of the on duty bartender, nor did I name her. Perhaps it would have been better if I clarified my target. It was management policy, or lack thereof that was a t fault. Kim is one of my favorite [people, one that I wouldn't ever personally attack. Read the paper, fools.

Unreasonable Fear

Today on facebook I read from many sources that there is a run on toilet paper. The stores are rationing it and folks are stocking up napkins, paper towels, and kleenex.

What the fuck is wrong with you. If you stock up in a normal way, without filling a room with unneeded stuff, there will be plenty to go around.

Unneeded  panic will produce a shortage of these items, not the virus. Stay away from crowds, cut back on social gatherings, and if  anything, just buy a few face masks. Do not hoard.

Stay out of bars, restaurants and theaters or  for that matter, avoid crowds. Then just go on with your life.

Where this ridiculous panic is going is creating an emergency, not solving one. Get a life, folks.

Historical vs Hysterical

The collective ego of the far left seems to feel that if something unusual happens,we control it by our collective actions. We are told by the experts that global warming is caused by coal and other related stuff.

An example or two, I am 82 years old. In my life experience, coal stoves were in every home except those with furnaces. A few years later most switched to oil stoves. Now these radicals claim we are currently on the road to hell anyway, even with electric and gas fuels. But lets regress back to our global climate in the past.

The last Ice Age, but not the only one, affected our area, Washington and Idaho. It was labeled  the Pleistocene Epoch. The last 15000 years covered our area with the Cordilleran. Ice Sheet. One result was a 300 foot drop in sea level.

As the ice crept forward  , it measured about 7000 feet deep as it crossed what is now the U.S./Canadian border. It dwindled down to about 3000 at its terminus near Seattle. The Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands were terra firma. These waterways were formed as the ice sheets retreated, gouging out new routes for the soon to be islands and inlets letting ocean water to flow inland.

During the periods between ice ages, Southern Greenland became a farming community founded by Danish explorer, Lief Erickson. There is too much information for just one post, so I'll sign off for now with follow ups later.

Next up,the great flood on the Clark Fork River.

Hans Neubauer, RIP

Yet another area icon has been lost. I wrote a tribute mostly dictated by his lovely three step-daughters several years ago. Today I must write another.

Hans arrived with friend and co-worker when Chan bought the Scenic Bay Marina, thence when the developer, who had bought up troubled resort properties got the y herself..opportunity to snap up these resorts at pennies on the dollar.

As before, the tribute was that he was a great Pop. This time it is about his work ethic, his integrity and his friendly approach to doing business. His loyalty to Chan is legendary.

We will all miss him. It is our understanding that Lynn, his widow does not want to run J.D.s by herself so reopening is up in the air. We understand that there will be a tribute this Saturday, time unknown. (2:00 pm)

Scenic Bay Marina  won't be the same without him.

Abolish the boat launch?

I was chatting with a woman yesterday about the dangers of boats launching, swimmers in the water and fishing all happening at the same time.

She had a simple solution. Abolish the boat launch and substitute a swimming beach. Leave the docks for boaters to access local businesses.

As intriguing as this sounds, boat trailers would not be crowding parking, and boats could launch at Farragut. I'd like to hear some comments on this.

Athol Relocated?

The story in today's Coeur d'Alene Press outlined several features, but left other glaring errors and omissions.

To start with it featured prominently the Silverwood Theme Park which indeed is a fine place to recreate. Still there are problems with the story by Tyler Wilson.

For starters, you cannot reach Athol from Hwy 53. Athol is framed by Hwy 54 which is the main street. Also, to arrive at Farragut State Park you must be on Hwy 54 as well. But wait. There is more.

Just four more miles you can access the premier vacation spot, Bayview. Nestled on the shores of Scenic Bay and adjacent to Idlewild Bay, the only sheltered waters in Lake Pend Oreille.

Seven marinas serve people from all parts of Washington and even Oregon. The sailing capitol of   North Idaho fishing and swimming, these activities rival Silverwood. They both serve the recreation needs, just in different ways.

Real Estate is also available both lots and homes with a fantastic view of the sparkling waters that treat residents and visitors alike.

So please return Athol, Farragut State Park and yes, Bayview, too.

The Lake House

Many of you are wondering why The Lake House aka floating Patio has been closed for the past three days. It will reopen today, Thursday June 6.

The closure was due to significant damage suffered from last weekend's severe Thunder Storm. Repairs have been completed and Natasha & company are again operational. Come on down.

Mueller Report Bullshoot a lot of info

Prosecutors are not asked to find the innocent, only the guilty and then only if a crime has been committed.

for those of you that rely on opinion over facts, you need to stop  casting aspersions based on philosophy and other Quackeries, and start using governing tactics along with communication aimed toward the inaccuracies of the socialist left, leaning harder every year.

This country cannot survive in a maelstrom of bitter denunciations and falsehood. Win at the ballot box if you will, but stop tearing this country apart.

The mainstream media is harping on the premise that the prosecutor is hiding something. He is. a protection for those that were found not guilty of any crime and any further info on them is not legal.

People on the far left or just crazy, stop it.

W.E.B. Griffin,R.I.P.

My two favorite fiction authors, Tom Clancy and now William E. Griffin 111 who wrote under the pen name of W.E.B. Griffin died at 98 years old a few days ago.

A veteran of the Korean war, has been there, done that and yes, has the T-shirt. He wrote several series on WW11 and Korea covering the Marine Corps, army, Special forces, CIA and many other facets of combat.

He is survived by his son who co-wrote several books with him.

An unhappy coincidence is I grow older, many of my friends and those that I admire have gone before me.

Birthdays Forgotten

I grew up celebrating the birthdays of President Washington and Lincoln. Lincoln February 12 and Washington February 22. Let us look back for a moment.

George Washington known as "The father of our country," lead the ragtag army to victory, then served as our first president. Without his leadership we probably would still be British.

Abraham Lincoln was president throughout the civil war, but managed to hold our union together.

Both birthdays were national holidays. Now we have Presidents day. Why? Because the federal bleeding hearts awarded Martin Luther King the one spot that erased the two greatest presidents from national recognition.

To take nothing away from King, he did nothing more than give a rousing speech in favor of equality. A noble gesture but hardly deserving of or measuring up to that of Washington or Lincoln, who were the giants of our country's birth.

James Wesley Jones, RIP

We as a community have lost some icons lately. Whether every place has the same problem I couldn't say. Bayview is a community where we all either know everyone, or at least know of them. An unfortunate coincidence has two Jones' passing in the same year, both huge contributors to their neighbors.

Captain Wes Jones was an innovator. Where waterborne mail carriers used to just deliver mail, bring groceries to snow bound east side residents, Captain Wes went a lot further. He renamed his boat the Liquid Limo and started combining mail delivery with hauling tourists on his route, stopping to admire mountain goats as he went.

My big beef is with the medical community and/or the overbearing government that is hammering pain medication abuse, dragging legitimate patients along with abusers. One size fits all is bullshit and caused a good man to end his life because he could no longer stand the unrelenting pain.

Services will be held at the Bayview Community Center, Saturday 2/16 at 100 pm.

Retroactive Blame

As we age, so does society. we learn as we all do. In the 1980's racial stereotypes abounded. Before that our leading singer was Al Jolson who sang what was then known as Negro Spirituals. He did it in black face. It wasn't to mock the black race, but black people were not allowed to perform so those like Jolson, who admired spirituals, who wore black face to honor that music.

This and other practices were socially acceptable then, but not now. Our society has grown and learned about equality. Thirty to fifty years later, young people without a sense of history are tearing down historical monuments to the civil war and suddenly examining these behaviors through 21st century eyes, discounting the intervening years, reexamining behavior long in the past with today's standards. This is dead wrong. Just as society has grown, so have individuals.

People like Virginia's governor and many others are having to deal with behavior from many years go when it was permissible. It is time to ditch retroactive blame and salute those that have grown past the socially ignorant years, not acting like leftist Nazis living in the past.

Leave history alone. The civil war happened and though many of our young people haven't a clue as to the real causes of rural vs.industrial areas of our country and the friction it caused. We now live in a much more enlightened age. Celebrate that rather than denigrate those that lived before you were born.

Jim Campbell, R.I.P.

I have the sad duty to announce the passing of a good friend of mine, Jim Campbell. He died this afternoon in his sleep at 6:30 this afternoon.

Jim worked at the Naval Base for many years, as did his wife, Jean. When he retired in 1995 he bought The Captain's Wheel out of bankruptcy.

The last loan I did before I retired was to arrange the SBA loan. But before that, I negotiated the sale between the seller, Jim and Jean Campbell and Norm and Sue Nordstrom

I'M BACK

I have a replacement laptop that was preventing me from accessing Bayviews.blogspot.com. That has been resolved, and I will begin posting again.

As soon as I decide to express an unsolicited opinion, you will be the first to know.

Happy New year to all.

Bayview Lighting Ceremony

The extra edition of Shorelines did an exceptional job of informing us of the festivities in the "large parking lot on Main St, " scheduled for December first.

Unfortunately some of her personal prejudices were obvious.I checked into this today and found that the entire expense of this extravaganza is being picked up by the owner of that "large parking lot on Main Street."

Chan Karupiah, owner of that lot plus five marinas, is picking up the tab.  For shame, Sheryl Puckett. You know better. If you want to be a news person, you must follow the rules. Otherwise you are just another extremist parroting your viewpoint instead of news.

This ceremony and others must always credit the sponsors.

S/R Sloppy Reporting

A few years ago I wrote about the Bayview mail boat. That was two contractors ago. The Sunday paper had a great piece as a follow up to my story in the Handle Extra. Unfortunately, who ever writes the captions erred on at least three and possibly four pictures.

First and most egregious, was naming Jim Kirkelie as having received his mail in Bayview. That pic is not of Bayview.

Several references were made saying Wes Jones delivers in Bayview. He does not. He picks up the mail in Bayview and delivers to residents lining the east side of Lake Pend Oreille.

Wes does not create a huge wake in Bayview,  as stated. Scenic Bay is a no wake zone. One that Jones respects.

Whether the reporter, Nathanael Massey, the photographer, or the editors made these sloppy captions, somebody needs to learn about accuracy.

Other than the errors in mislabeling  pictures, the story was first rate, as is the subject, Wes Jones who does an excellent job in serving the community's in the lake's south end.

"If It Ain't Broke..."

Much debate is taking place over the sale of Avista to a Canadian Distributor, for what purpose? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Recently, a Canadian firm has offered to buy Avista. Why? Avista is locally owned and controlled, financially sound and doesn't need a new owner.

The board of directors was fired by the province of ONTARIO.

Now, with a new board they still want to steal our utility. If there is a compelling reason to sell it hasn't been publicized. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
