Bayview Daze Raffle

The Bell's, pictured above, will be playing outside at the Captain's Wheel, Saturday, the 4th

Bayview Daze wouldn't be the same without the $1000 raffle, but wait, there's more! Not only does the grand prize winner receive the Grand, but this year several lesser prizes have been added with more pouring in all the time. One such, is a half day cruise on the Mercantile's pontoon boat. The Captain's Wheel donated a $50.00 gift certificate and Ralph's Cafe, a wine basket. A few raffle tickets are still available at the Merc, Ralph's and the Captain's Wheel. Only 100 are sold, so get yours before it's too late. Drawing is right after the parade, About noon, Saturday, the 4th.

Everything appears to be set for the big day Saturday, but don't forget that the street fair will be active all day Friday, as well. The BCC will feature a lemonade stand, (deprived childhood probably) a centennial booth, where material for next year's centennial will be available. Linda Hackbarth and Peter Balbi put together a pictorial history of Bayview and surrounding areas which will be available, plus many arts and craft booths.

This year looks to be the best in a long time. Parade entries need to turn up 1st street for line up. Prior notice isn't required. Just show up around 10:00 or earlier if you want to be up front.

Day Cruises Available

A recently formed cruise boat is available for those who visit Bayview, but don't have the ability to see the lake, from the lake. See mountain goats frolicking on Bernard peak, panoramic views for miles that include bear, elk, cougar, moose, deer and occasionally a large fish jumping as if asking permission to come aboard. This service is available from a licensed operator with Coast Guard certification. For more information, call Wake Up Tours, at 208-660-5388.

We are in the last week of preparations for what will possibly the best Bayview Daze celebration yet. The parade starts at 11:00 am with roads closed at about 10:30 am. Get into town early, so you can get good parking. If you are skipping the parade and just want to get to your moorage, don't be late, or plan on spending some time at a road block. We just learned that the Captain's Wheel is featuring daytime music Saturday, the fourth. The ever popular Bell's will be playing outdoors throughout the afternoon.

A rumor suggesting that the Bayview chamber of commerce has forbidden candy tosses, is false. Some unauthorized person reported such to the sheriff department, which is ironic, since Sheriff Rocky Watson threw candy in last year's parade.

Athol City Clerk Retires

After 24 years of holding the city of Athol together with her expertise, city clerk Charlotte Hooper is retiring. In a one person office, she has ran the food bank, acted as water department,Building, planning & zoning, and every other department that in a larger city would be separate duties. A retirement party to be held this Saturday, June 27 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm will be held at the Athol community Center.

Taking on the awesome job of filling Charlotte's shoes is two year resident, Sally Hansen. Sally has had a varied career with assisting in an attorney's office, hazmat control, mentoring developmentally disabled children while caring for husband Chuck and four boys. Chuck is working for the Lakeland school district.

We understand that Charlotte will be continuing in her role as food bank director, for the immediate future. Everyone is invited to the party, whether or not you live in Athol.

Bayview's Centennial

Although Bayview isn't incorporated, the town was platted in 1910. A very active committee is working on projects to celebrate this date by using this year's Bayview Daze as a kickoff for the coming event.

One very special effort is the pictorial review of our history which is hot off the press. I got my first copy today and read all the way through the 83 pages. This fine work was compiled by Peter Balbi and Linda Hackbarth with the help of about 50 contributors. The book is available through Linda if you call 208-683-3468 or by checking on line at: www.bayviewhs.com. The introductory price is $20.00 and it is absolutely worth every penny. Linda will also mail your copy for a $3 dollar charge.

There will be a booth from which the book can be purchased at the Bayview Daze street fair, also. Subsequent sales will be at a higher price at various commercial locations. Speaking of Bayview Daze, it's getting real close, so make your plans to be in Bayview before 10:30 am Saturday, July 4th for the parade, followed by the street fair and at dusk a lighted boat parade. Rumor has it that the navy stealth destroyer will be in the parade, but then you won't be able to see it, will you? The grand finally of course, is the gigantic largest fireworks display seen anywhere in the state. Your attendance is required.

On a cautionary note, Timberlake Fire District is going to be strictly enforcing fireworks regulations, especially those that fly, such as roman candles and such. These devices are extremely dangerous around marinas and boats in general. There always are a few that will light off loud explosive devices. These, every year cause the loss and or death of several pets. Dogs will run in a straight line panicked to the point they don't know where they are and can't find their way back home. Some will go running down a pier, where they can drown. That also happened a few years ago. Keep the dogs secured or chance loosing your pet.

More Blogfest Photos

The top is a group photo with several Huckster's in it. The bottom one features Kerri T. explaining the finer points of beer balls, to an interested observer. In the background, lurks the Stickman. I can't believe I missed getting a shot of our hostess, the irrepressible Taryn. She was moving around so fast I couldn't catch up with her. I suspect she was doing photo work in the house while we were loading up with a huge assortment of goodies from the various barbecues.

Back Country Rescues

The following is a report received from Timberlake Fire District, along with the photos that they provided:

"At 7:07 PM on Saturday, June 20, 2009, the Timberlake Fire Protection District and a Paramedic from North Lakes Fire Protection District responded to a UTV accident on Forest Service Road 2708A, approximately 5 miles from the Bunco Parking Lot. The patient was not wearing a helmet - we encourage all ATV/UTV operators to wear a helmet and other protective equipment. Medstar was launched to the Bunco Parking Lot. Kootenai County Sheriff Deputies secured the landing zone.

Responders accessed the patient with a UTV owned by the patient's friend and the fire district suburban. The road was not suitable for the ambulance. The patient was packaged, stabilized, and transported to the helicopter via the suburban. The fire district does not have access or own an ATV or UTV, but desperately needs one for these types of incidents, which are becoming more frequent. The Medstar helicopter transported the patient at 8:51 PM to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene."

This marks the third rescue in the last month involving Lakeview and/or the surrounding back country. Access on the roads in that area are primitive at best and impassable at worst. It would appear vital that the Fire Commissioners find a way to equip the department with off-road capability.

Blogfather's Day

Some parties are planned months in advance, with extravagant preparations. Others, like today's Taryn & Bent Fest was a smash hit. It wasn't structured. Taryn said, "let's have a party," and bent said, "how about I bring some of my infamous home brew beer." It all went uphill from there. Several folks present turned out to be excellent BBQ artists.

I brought the potato salad and the banjo. The potato salad worked better than the banjo, since I haven't been playing it much for the last year and to say I was a bit rough was being kind, still, it didn't appear that anyone minded at all. From far and wide, berry pickers converged on the Hecker Ranch in beautiful downtown Spirit Lake.

There was shish-kabob, BBQ pork Ribs, Chateau Brianne steak, (courtesy of Bent)and a plethora of side dishes and stuff. Kerri brought some delectable beer sausages. I'm sure I didn't get that right, but they were small almost baseball shaped sausages that were great.

DFO, who originally said he would drop by for a couple of hours, was still there, holding court with all those folks that support the Huckleberries blog. some with blogs of their own, and some just regular commentators, or as we call them, "Blurkers." Knowing that Bent's home brew might just have an extra kick to it, I weaseled out after about three hours.

I remembered the last time I suggested to Dave that we have a return match at the original home of the Blogfest, the Captain's Wheel. He said, no, I don't think anyone wants to drive that far. Now we know that if offered food and drink, Bloggers will journey far from home.

One thing that I learned was that Bent is not just a beer maker. Supported by his beautiful wife and daughter, he also is an excellent BBQ guy. It appeared that all were having great fun at the bash that wasn't planned.

Above, are some of the pictures I took while lurking in the shadows.

2nd photo: Bent, Mrs. Bent and of course everyone's darlin', S/R's own Cindy Hval.

IDL Screws Timberlake Fire District

Excerpt from Timberlake Fire District Web Site:

At 4:20 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2009, the Timberlake Fire Protection District was dispatched to a "smoke check" in Cape Horn Estates. A boater in Lake Pend Oreille called 9-1-1 to report what he suspected to be an out of control brush fire. We respond to a lot of "smoke checks" throughout the year, but this one turned out to be a "working brush fire." Idaho Department of Lands was requested immediately along with a helicopter due to the terrain. The helicopter was not available, but will begin its contract on July 1 along with the Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) based out of Coeur d'Alene.

The fire was burning approximately 400 feet north of Glacier Road in the National Forest Service land. The initial size was 300 feet long by 60 feet deep. The terrain was extremely steep and rocky with the fire burning at the base of cliffs. The fire eventually made it to the top of the cliffs and burned about 1 acre of grass and light brush. Luckily, we were able to contain the fire to 2 acres and get hose lines around the perimeter. We were also fortunate that the winds were calm since they had been blowing at 5-10 miles per hour for the past few days.

Timberlake Fire responded with 2 brush trucks, one tender, one engine, and one chief. The Timberlake Fire Boat was also deployed on the lake to provide us with a better perspective of the scene and alert for any safety issues. Northern Lakes Fire Protection District assisted with a brush truck and Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) sent 9 personnel with 2 engines. Once the fire was contained, the scene was turned over to IDL and a Timberlake Brush truck remained on scene for support. Since it was not safe to continue mopping up after dark, IDL and Timberlake Fire will be back in the morning to check on the fire and ensure it is completely out. A second smaller fire was also burning 150 feet below the main fire.

The fire is deemed suspicious at this time. For more information contact Fire Chief Jack Krill at chief@timberlakefire.com or 208-683-3333.

Today's revelation from IDL:

"Something I just learned about the fire we had in Cape Horn Estates off Glacier Loop. Since it was all outside of the fire district boundary in USFS land (except for that one stump) and since IDL did not request our response, they will not reimburse us for the cost of anything except B651 (and that will only be the couple of hours they requested B651 stay). Therefore, if we respond to any fire and determine that it is outside of our district boundary and outside of a neighboring fire district boundary which we have a mutual/automatic aid agreement with, do not initiate suppression action. "Notify IDL and return to quarters." (The amount billed to the IDL was $3713.33. Fighting fires is not cheap. Herb's aside)

"I have requested that IDL send us something in writing concerning this." (End Chief Krill's E-Mail to the department's firefighters.)

Two clear points that occur to me. One, the reporting party didn't call Timberlake Fire, but 9-1-1. Dispatch called out Timberlake, at which time Chief Krill immediately called in IDL. It must be pointed out that while up slope from nearby homes, it was within 300 feet of some very nice homes, that with an afternoon wind shift, could have been a disaster. By the time IDL arrived, (with one p/u truck) Timberlake had been on the fire for about three hours. At the time Timberlake was relieved at the scene by IDL the fire was essentially out, except a few smoking hot spots, which we are told flared up again the following morning. Local residents informed us that IDL had pulled everyone off of the fire, leaving no fire guard at the scene to monitor the site. With funding at a premium due to the economy slump, It would appear that inspired chickenshit is being applied here, since the money Timberlake used to fight the fire, would have been spent by IDL, not to mention how much more the fire would have spread with the IDL slower response time.

How Am I Doing?

Just a little curious about the redesign of my blog site, which was volunteered by Stebbijo. Some stuff got deleted, such as my site meter and blogroll links, but are slowly being put back together. I kind of like the expanded format. How about you?

Taryn & Bent's big blast is all set to get going Saturday pm. The weather looks a little iffy, but we'll have fun anyway. It looks like a feast in the making. I have regenerated the potato salad supply, since what was made last week without preservatives wouldn't have been safe to eat this week. Taryn told me to bring my banjo, so cover yer ears, folks.

Thanks, Stebbijo

The changes to my template were made by Stebbijo, who designed the original for me. She does great work, doesn't she. You all should have known I wasn't capable of doing it myself.

Bayview Daze Are Upon Us Again

Most years, Bayview has an exclusive with our fireworks show and our street parade, plus of course, our street fair. Every seventh year though, the 4Th of July falls on a Saturday, which is always the day Bayview celebrates. This is that 7th year. That means everyone is going to have to choose between the various venues, rather than enjoy at least two of them.

It really boils down to whether most are aware that our fireworks display is second to none and you can have fun all day and into the night with live music, fireworks and many other enjoyable pursuits, including getting out on the lake. The other option, is to cram your family into downtown Coeur d'Alene, park a half mile away from the action, see a ho hum fireworks display, then spend the next three hours trying to exit the city.

Bayview is still a huge secret to many Spokane and even Coeur d'Alene residents, but more and more, folks are opting for the simple life here, where you can walk the entire downtown without fear of being run over, enjoy the fine food and spirits served by the various bars and restaurants.

The parade this year, will be a bit of a mystery, since we don't require advance registration. Undoubtedly, some will head for the big city, but many others, for the aforementioned reasons, enjoy coming to Bayview Daze year after year. We hear that we'll have a kazoo band, plus many others, including rumors that new and exciting entries will be there this year for the first time.

A lighted boat parade will precede the fireworks display, Saturday night. For line up information or any other questions, call Cindy@ 683-1859.

On behalf of the Bayview Chamber of Commerce which sponsors the event, Babs and the Community Council, I want to welcome all of you to this year's extravaganza. When you get here, please be on the lookout for donation cans. Our fireworks are totally paid for by donations.

Timing Is Everything

If there were further proof needed, I solved the problem this week. You see, my memory is in the tank.I am becoming senile, which bodes ill for those of you that use logic for arguments. fortunately, there are very few blurkers that this will affect.

So that my many detractors don't glom onto this, I thought it best to just fess up. Last Thursday, I spent about 5 hours cooking up my patented world famous potato salad. It came out perfect, which doesn't happen all the time. The potatoes came out perfect, which is, believe me, not automatic. I added all of my secret ingredients, and ended up with perhaps the best Potato salad I have ever made. The Captain's wheel agreed to keep said potato salad in their walk in, because I had made about fifteen pounds of the stuff for Taryn's party in Spirit Lake.

Alas, this is where the senility comes in. You see, Taryn's party isn't today, but a week away, Jun 20. I have not only been punked, but have actually did it to myself. Faced with the waste of a large amount of Potato salad, I gave it away. Next week, back to the stove. The oddest part of this story, is as I was sitting at a watering station for the Adventure sports Week runners, who comes by but Taryn herself. A few words later, and I truly am back to the drawing board. the burning question of the day, of course, is can I duplicate the magnificent batch I made this week, next week. Only time will tell. (I could sure use one of bent's beers right now.)

More Fun In The Sun

Tomorrow morning will find me in an unusual place at an unusual time. The big featured race of the week starts at 6 am and I, in a weak moment, volunteered to be a ... volunteer. As a retired person, 6:00 am is a milepost that passes in the night, unless someone next door revs their engine.

Since the participants don't have access to the Internet at their campground, I'm going to whisper some inside info about tomorrow. First, a big bunch of professional and some amateur mountain bike riders will chase each other around the park for a while, then head into downtown Bayview, where around 8:30 am you will see bikers with determined looks on their faces, as they speed through town.

I have been informed that the participants have or will be informed that they are on their own and will not have traffic blocked off, like they have enjoyed this last week. That means that theoretically, they will yield to automobile traffic. That and a belief in the tooth fairy, will get you in trouble. consider these guys and gals are extremely competitive. To them, a car coming at them is no challenge, only another racer closing from the rear. In other words, while on the way to the annual pancake breakfast at the Captain's Wheel, be watchful and yield the right of way to these great athletes.

All contestants will be forced to stop at Ralph's Internet Cafe, to pick up maps and such before trekking on up to Evans Landing, where rumor has it, they will be met by a barge with kayaks on board. It is hard for me to imagine this, because some of these bikes are worth in the neighborhood of five figures, why they would trust Charley Kramer to deliver them back to the starting point, but hey, anything is possible. Those of you that have computers, might want to check into Bayview Bob's web site, where the navy cameras constantly scan the area you can expect the kayaks to come charging by.

Personally, I thought I'd seen everything, until these contestants. Apparently, a well trained human can surpass what most of us would consider impossible. If you are out on the lake tomorrow, figure on seeing the kayaks coming south past the navy barges around noon, on their way to the finish line which is supposedly in Idlewilde Bay. Bayview Bob's site is at:http://www.bayview-idaho.com/

Bayview Activities For June

L-E Chief Krill, Steve Stolberg

L-R Dick Hansen, Chuck Waller, Chris Hansen and Chief Krill

This month will probably be the busiest month of the year. This Saturday features the Chamber of commerce Annual Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast, June 13, 8-11am. At the same time, Adventure Sports Week will run bikes through town in the infamous,"Crux & Crucible" race, which pits endurance, innovation and multiple skills, against the best Mother nature can throw at them. There will be racers in town in the am, so be prepared for some backed up traffic.

Last night, Tuesday, at the Bayview Chamber of commerce meeting, Fire district chief, Jack Krill presented hero awards to Chuck Waller, Dick Hansen and Chris Hansen, for the rescue last Thanksgiving day, when a boat caught fire and three men on board leaped overboard. One person didn't make it, but for the quick response of these men, the other two wouldn't have survived either. Dietmar Kruger also responded and was given the award in absentia, since he was out of town. Also honored, both for spotting the floating patio fire, calling it in, also led the fire fighters through the technical side of the building saving valuable time, as the gas dock, just behind the building wasn't burned, nor did the entire dock go up as in previous fires. Steve Stolberg, then alerted residents and boater so they could stay out of the way. It's this kind of citizen participation that makes Bayview a great place to live & play.

Other activities find the Bayview community council holding their annual meeting at the now rebuilt floating patio, June 16 @ 7pm. June 18 will feature a community potluck at the community center 5:30 pm.

Their will be two fire exercises in June. The first will be on the 22nd and the second the 29th, both on "C" dock, Scenic Bay Marina. These drills train the department personnel how to fight a marina fire.

Lest we forget, Bayview Daze parade and fireworks will be held Saturday, July 4 this year, since every 7th year finds the 4th falling on a Saturday. This means that other venues will be holding parades and fireworks, so if you want to beat the unbelievable crowds in Coeur d'Alene, come on down. We think our fireworks display is second to none in our area.

Adventure Sports Week

The first half of Adventure Sports Week is in the books. This event is very similar to Ironman, but without the publicity. International Triathlon contestants gathered at Farragut State Park for this extravaganza. When it's all over, at the end of next week-end, 24 races will have been held.

This the first year that this event has been held at Farragut, and confusion reigned. While the races themselves went off just fine, nobody seemed to know or care about the publicity angle. Advance notice of what, when and where were missing, making it very difficult to cover the events. I attempted to do so, and caught some piecemeal information that doesn't begin to describe this week long event.

Saturday started off with one of the featured races, a triathlon, involving a 1500 meter swim, then a run up a very steep slope to the Sunrise Campground, the start finish line for all events. Quickly shucking the wet suits, they hopped on their mountain bikes for an 18 mile ride. Several of the entrants were international professionals that will be seen again at Ironman in Couer d'Alene, also in Idaho.

To illustrate how competitive these races are, three time world champion triathlon leader, Conrad Stoltz of South Africa, placed 5th in this race. Perhaps the most amazing entrant though, was Megan Fisher. Megan is a medical student at the University of Montana. Her goal is to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. Observed climbing the treacherous sledding hill that comes up out of the big ampitheater. She sccoted up and out of that part of the course way ahead of some of the men. The surprise though, was that she does it with only one leg.

Fisher was in a serious auto accident when she was 19 years old. The result was the loss of her left leg. fitted with a prosthetic limb, she started training just 11 months after her ordeal. She ran Maui last year, winning the disability division. Results have been spotty and undecipherable to this non-triathlon person, but I believe she won her division again this year. This is the 6th year since the accident and she appeared to be doing very well.

A persistent rumor that was repeated to me by one of the race officials was that a boy under the minimum age, lied his age and participated with a $10 bike bought at a garage sale. This against professionals that some spend up to $10,000 for their racing bikes. He apparently has swam the long bridge race several times, but had never raced a mountain bike competitively. While he didn't win the race, the pro's were astounded that he finished, and did so on a Husky brand cheap bike.

Several contestants informed me that the swim portion at the beginning was real tough, with the wind blowing hard, into Idlewild Bay, causing severe chop, but all contestants made it to shore, including the gutsy young lady, now age 25, from Montana.

Results are in for the pro segment of the Saturday triathlon as follows:

Adventure Sports Week

This extravaganza that comes just a couple of weeks before Ironman in Coeur d'Alene, kicked off today with the Gauntlet. A short course Triathlon, (short, my ass, the bike ride alone would have killed me)Began on the beach below the starting point at, Sunrise Picnic grounds.

The short course triatholon began with a long swim against a persistant chop due to the wind whistling into Idlewild Bay. Somehow, all of the swimmers survived, but just in time to race up a steep path, peeling off their wetsuits, preparatory to grabbing their bike and heading out for a twice around course equaling 18 miles, thence back to the start finish line, where we understand they were further abused.

After taking a few pictures at the end of the swim and start of the bike portion, I headed out for the top of the Big amphitheater, commonly referred to as the sledding hill, locally. There, realizing they were short one traffic controller, I acted as a spotter for the flagger. In the process, I met some very interesting folks. One lady contestant, was wearing a prosthetic left leg, and wasn't doing too bad. Actually she was leading many other riders, including many men.

Which brings me to my next point. No logic that I could find, identified those that should have led, opposed to those that should have been far behind. I saw elderly women leading men, young women kicking ass on the guys their own age, there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the standings as I saw them, other that I would have been dead halfway through the race. The organizers were a little disorganized, I didn't get the press packet I was promised, and I, at this time do not have winners, or for that matter, any other names to share. I will attempt to fix that tomorrow.

Timberlake Fire Busy

Yesterday, Thursday, June 4, a fire broke out above the gated community at the end of Cape Horn, on Glacier Loop. Fortunately, the fire was located on a rough steep slope above the last houses on the hillside.

Approximately 2 acres burned, according to Chief Krill, of the Timberlake Fire District. When the department got to the site, they noted the fire was burning in two different, but adjacent spots, which was noted as a suspicious situation. No firm evidence had surfaced as to the actual cause, at the time the fire district retired from the scene.

Idaho department of Lands was called in, since the fire was burning on public lands. They cut a fire line around the location to prevent the blaze from starting up again.

An interesting breakdown in communications, caused a delay last Saturday. A report was received from Bonner county Dispatch, of a serious burn case in Lakeview, which is located due east of Bayview, across the south end of Lake Pend Oreille. A propane explosion had caused a man to experience burns over 30% of his body and face.

Timberlake fire District, which is located in Kootenai county, has the responsibility for Lakeview and the west shore, up to Maiden Rock, in Bonner County. With the fire district caught between two jurisdictions, confusion sometimes occurs. In this case, the response was sent to Bunco road, which would have taken an hour to get to Lakeview overland. Its was then changed to a boat rescue with the land transportation furnished by the Happy Hermit. When the EMS crew reached the patient, it was determined that a helicopter rescue was needed. Bonner county failed to respond. The request was then relayed to Kootenai County Dispatch, who then sent Med Star. The patient was rescued successfully, but with multiple delays. In burn cases such as this, enormous pain usually is experienced.

We must remember, that when it appears that the fire department is running in circles, they are being controlled by a dispatch center and though they are the ones that may look foolish, it's not them, folks. It has been made very clear, through their actions in emergencies, that they have performed magnificently in recent fire and other emergencies. It is the coordination between the two counties that needs to be studied for improvements are needed to prevent the inevitable lose of life, due to the various jurisdictions crossing up the smooth flow of the responders.

Euphemisms (Spin Control)

As I sit in mourning for old fashioned journalism, I ponder what has happened in the last few years. News has become show business, both in the print media and television, mostly but not all, in the TV industry.

For the last week, we have been reading about the upcoming bankruptcy of Chrysler and General Motors. In the case of General Motors, the plan is for the, "Tax Payers" to own 70 % of GM. This is where spin comes in. First, I as a tax payer will not own any of either corporation. The U.S. Government will. It was tax payers that originally owned both. When GM comes out of bankruptcy, those taxpayers that used to own this huge company, will be stuck with worthless stock certificates.

In the old days of news reporting, this dodge, (no pun intended) would have not been thinkable. Some ask why didn't the company and the US government act sooner, like a year ago? The simple truth is that we, the public have short memories. In the case of the so called recession, most active young people, and even many middle aged, have never experienced a serious downturn in the over all economy.

Sure, logging and mining, here in North Idaho have seen serious slumps and in many cases, especially logging, these large, labor intensive businesses are gone. One such mill is now the Resort Golf Course. Others, lined the Spokane river, from the north end of Lake Coeur d'Alene, to Post falls. Now, just the forlorn pilings south of the Hwy 95 bridge, stand sentinel as the vacant log booms of yesterday are long gone.

To put this all in perspective, General Motors is 100 years old. That means that they were an automotive manufacturer since 1909, which eclipses the great depression. Our fearless leaders, not wanting a general panic, as happened in 1929 and the subsequent depression which was mostly lack of confidence in our ability to come back, lasted another 8 years or more. This is why GM wasn't forced into bankruptcy a year ago.

The spin, is by definition, a statement of fact that tends to hint at something other than bare truth. It is time for the news industry to stop playing Patsy with the government and admit that when this is all over, the US government will have taken over most of our privately held heavy industry as well as a large chunk of the finance sector. At the end of the day, if this isn't stopped, we'll be more socialist than Russia.

Let's look at the alternative. If GM had just gone bankrupt, new owners would have popped up, bought the business from the courts and started over. Maybe GM gobbled up two many smaller car companies and got too large. Don't forget that names like: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Plymouth, Dodge, Buick, Oldsmobile, Chrysler,Willy's, the maker of jeeps, were not just model names. These were separate car manufacturers that were gobbled up by what is now General Motors, and Chrysler, which will exist no more than one month from now. A new company will sprout from the old, run principally by the government, not stockholders. How many of you think that government can run a business better than private enterprise. In the coming years, look for the Supreme Court to be very, very busy.
